On Wednesday 21 December 2016, the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution carried out an initiative in Beit Hanoun entitled \"Creating child-friendly spaces in Beit Hanoun\", in order to create a suitable environment in the reception and care departments for children, by painting the walls, adding drawings and providing games and supportive tools that help children feel confident and at ease while receiving treatment in hospital.
\nThe initiative was opened by Dr. Jamil Suleiman, director of the hospital, and Ms. Ola Al-Hassi, project manager at the Palestinian Center, in the presence of the hospital's board, the head of the paediatrics department, members of the local community committee in Beit Hanoun and the project team.
\nIn his address, the hospital director thanked those behind these development projects that support our community and our children, stressing the need to continue supporting marginalised groups, particularly children, who need a tender touch from everyone. He stressed that the psychological side and social support for our patients, especially children, is halfway to full recovery, and that the hospital's management looks forward to more projects so that it can provide integrated services to patients. He also stressed the need to deliver programmes that serve the child and the family psychologically and socially and to develop support mechanisms at every level in order to develop the health institution, which watches over our patients and makes enormous efforts in all circumstances to provide health services and ensure their continuity.
\nIman Abu Saeed, coordinator for the northern area, added that the initiative included many activities aimed at strengthening the children's personal skills such as leadership, communication, lobbying and advocacy, raising their awareness of the importance of contributing to community activities and their sense of responsibility. It was implemented starting from their own proposal of the idea, then a visit by the community protection committee and the children's committee to the hospital to choose the place to be painted and to prepare the logistics for the initiative, their attendance at art workshops with a specialist artist, and finally the conclusion of the initiative by painting the hospital walls.
\nThese efforts fall within the Beit Hanoun children's initiative \"Creating child-friendly spaces in Beit Hanoun\". The number of participants in the initiative was 20 boys and girls, targeting the 9 to 14 age group, with activities and events beginning in early October 2016.
\nThis falls within the plan of the project \"Improving access to protection and health services for children with disabilities in the Gaza Strip\", funded by Save the Children.<\/span><\/h5>\n
