On Monday 19 December 2016, the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution held a hearing session at Al-Maghazi Municipality on citizens' views of municipalities' performance in providing services to the public, in the hall of the Al-Maghazi Society for Community Rehabilitation.
\nMr. Raed Abu Saada, the session chair, welcomed the session's guests: Mr. Mohammed Al-Najjar, mayor of Al-Maghazi, Eng. Khaled Ahmed, director of the health and crafts department, Eng. Mohammed Mughari, head of the engineering and planning department, and Eng. Ibrahim Al-Khatib, head of the water and sanitation department. The meeting was attended by a large number of municipal council members, mukhtars, dignitaries, residents and heads of neighbourhood committees from Al-Maghazi camp, and many important issues serving citizens' interests were discussed.
\nAl-Najjar, mayor of Al-Maghazi, expressed his thanks to the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution for its efforts and cooperation with the municipality, expressing his pleasure at being among the camp's residents and noting that continuous communication and similar meetings are a strength in consolidating the relationship between the two sides.
\nEng. Khaled Ahmed gave a full explanation of the municipality's departments and units and its external service facilities such as the cultural centre and the public library, and of the reality of the services provided to the local community in various fields in order to strengthen community partnership. He noted that the municipality has close relations with neighbourhood committees, which have helped improve their situation through the delivery of vital and important projects stemming from citizens' wishes.
\nEng. Mohammed Mughari presented the many projects currently being implemented and those proposed for 2017, the most important being opening the planned streets, including Al-Sultani Street (20 m wide and 50 m long) and Ali Al-Musaddar Street (10 m wide and 260 m long), in addition to opening street No. 30, developing the Al-Sabkha area in partnership with international organisations, developing Al-Sultani Street, and establishing a geographic information systems unit.
\nAppropriate solutions were discussed and agreed, the most important being community participation by citizens through adopting a mechanism for participating in the work plans and policies of Al-Maghazi Municipality and its council; organising training and awareness programmes for citizens in the Al-Maghazi area and strengthening effective community participation between citizens and the municipality. The municipality also called on citizens to follow the announced guidance on environmental health to keep the neighbourhood clean, as well as relocating and developing the central market, solving the sanitation problem in the weekly Sunday market and increasing the workforce.<\/span><\/h5>\n

This falls within the plan of the project \"An Advanced Step Towards Social Accountability\", in cooperation with the National Endowment for Democracy, across the governorates of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n
