Within the project \"An advanced step towards social accountability, year two\"<\/p>\n

The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution held an extended public meeting with the Ministry of Health on the shortage of medicines and medical supplies on Sunday 20\/3\/2018, attended by Dr. Munir Al-Bursh, director general of pharmacy, Dr. Alaa Halas, director of the pharmacy department at the general administration of hospitals, Mr. Waleed Sabbah, director of the unit for coordination with civil organisations, and a gathering of citizens, invitees and interested people. The meeting was opened by Fatima Al-Zahraa Al-Arja, a member of the social accountability team, who welcomed the guests and then reviewed the youth team's tasks and its achievements throughout the project. Hisham Ahmed, a member of the team, then presented the results of the study and the opinion polls of service recipients on the shortage of medicines and supplies, and Mr. Rabie Hamouda, the session's facilitator, welcomed the guests, introduced them and spoke about how the session would run and what would be discussed during it.<\/p>\n

Dr. Munir Al-Bursh began by speaking about medicines and medical supplies at the ministry and the severe shortage the ministry suffers and the lack of means because of the circumstances the Strip is going through. He spoke about the monitoring mechanism the ministry follows over the medicines and supplies that reach the Strip, their submission to proper testing, and the destruction of whatever is unfit among the donations and gifts. He went on to say that they work to ensure medicines are stored safely in suitable and good conditions, so that they are stored properly and tested appropriately in the ministry's laboratories. Dr. Alaa Halas then spoke, commenting on the study and offering some observations on it, explaining that citizens base their assessment of a medicine's quality on the patient's improvement, and noting that the ministry operates a strict monitoring system with unannounced and random testing of samples of medicines.<\/p>\n

Medicines are also subject to an excellent storage system and are followed up regularly and continuously.<\/p>\n

There are also procedures that regulate the work inside the ministry's pharmacies, and medicines are dispensed according to the hospitals' needs and not on a quota system by governorate.<\/p>\n

The session's facilitator then began to hear the audience's questions, where Mr. Bashar Al-Ghusain asked what alternatives you have to keep the people in Gaza alive amid the severe shortage, and what the criteria are for judging a medicine's quality.<\/p>\n

Dr. Alaa Halas answered that if a mistake occurs it is quickly put right, and that the control of medicines in the health sector makes it impossible for a substandard medicine to appear.<\/p>\n

Mr. Raed Safi asked what the solutions are, and why some pharmacies sell medicines marked \"not for sale\" and how they reached them.<\/p>\n

He answered that one must speak in figures so that the work is based on facts, and that when a pharmacy is found selling a medicine, the ministry's free number (103) should be called and informed, and there may be some irregularities by a few.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Fatima Sabri asked how he explains citizens' dissatisfaction with the quality of medicines.<\/p>\n

The answer was that citizens consider a medicine effective only in the case of recovery from the illness.<\/p>\n

Many questions were answered, and at the end of the meeting the session's facilitator thanked those present and the guests for attending and wished them a good day.<\/p>\n
