A hearing session on \"The reality of water and sanitation services in Al-Maghazi camp\" was held in the hall of the Al-Maghazi Society for Community Rehabilitation in the centre of the camp, implemented by the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution within the activities of the project \"Empowering citizens through institutionalising social accountability in local government\", with support from the Local Governance Reform Programme implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).<\/p>\n

It was attended by the mayor Mr. Mohammed Baraka Al-Najjar, the head of the water and sanitation department at the municipality Eng. Ibrahim Al-Khatib, and the director of the Water Utility in the Middle Governorate Eng. Radwan Abu Karim.<\/p>\n

The session was opened by Mr. Abdel Moneim Al-Tahrawi, projects manager at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, in the presence of a number of mukhtars and dignitaries, representatives of institutions, neighbourhood committees and members of the camp's youth council.<\/p>\n

Mr. Mohammed Baraka Al-Najjar opened the meeting by welcoming those present and thanking them for their interest in important local community issues.<\/p>\n

He also expressed his deep thanks to the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution for its role in promoting the concept of community participation.<\/p>\n

The mayor spoke about the municipality's role in developing the water and sanitation sector in the camp, stressing the need to promote the concept of accountability<\/p>\n

and transparency in its work, given their positive role in improving performance and strengthening the relationship between the municipality and citizens.<\/p>\n

Eng. Ibrahim Al-Khatib, head of the water and sanitation department at the municipality, then gave a presentation on the water situation in the camp, the projects currently being implemented and the municipality's efforts to improve the water situation there.<\/p>\n

For his part, Eng. Radwan Abu Karim, director of the Water Utility, Middle Governorate branch, sounded the alarm about the water situation in Palestine in general, citing figures and statistics showing that a high proportion of water is unfit for use. He also spoke about desalination plants and their permitted specifications.<\/p>\n

The meeting was also attended by Eng. Ramzi Al-Madhoun, adviser to the Water Regulatory Council and its representative in the Gaza Strip, and Eng. Mohammed Saeed Al-Humaidi, chair of the Water Regulatory Council in Palestine, who made interventions that enriched the meeting with information and data on the water sector in Palestine.<\/p>\n

The floor was then opened for discussion and questions from those present, facilitated by the session chair Mr. Abdel Moneim Al-Tahrawi. Questions and enquiries were answered by the speakers, and many points and concepts were clarified for those attending.<\/p>\n

At the end of the session, Mr. Abdel Moneim Al-Tahrawi expressed his deep thanks to those present and to the municipality, represented by its mayor, for their cooperation in promoting the concept of accountability and transparency.<\/p>\n
