I fear for my children from sexual harassment
I am a married woman and I have four children. I fear greatly for them from sexual harassment, especially after I heard the story of one of our relatives when one of their children, the same age as my children, was assaulted by an adult, which affected him deeply. I hope you can help me protect my children.
Dear sister,
I am pleased that you are looking for mechanisms and ways to protect your children, as this reflects how much you care and the level of awareness you have.
Our children have experiences suited to their ages and they have information and knowledge that they sometimes need explained, and parents usually neglect to give the child attention, which generates repression in them and affects their future.
It is important to listen to them when they speak, not to suppress them, and to try to guide them towards what is right, for they do not fear speaking to us but fear that we will listen badly and not care about them. There are many parents who do not know their children's behaviour until it is too late and a mistake has occurred, since neglect and poor upbringing are two factors that help mistakes and danger to happen.
Here is a set of methods that can be followed and observed so that your child is safer, as follows:
• Caring about children's feelings, listening to them and making them feel safer when they speak to us.
• Training them to talk with us about what happens to them during their day at school, in the street and at home.
• Training the child in ways of protecting himself from strangers, particularly those a few years older than the child, and not to accept a ride or go in a stranger's car.
• Keeping the child away from isolated places that encourage harassment and being alone with the child.
• Watching over children while they play so that they are not left alone together, without letting them feel this, and by that we do not mean exaggerated control.
• Instilling religious teachings in easy and simple ways to protect children from falling into or practising the various deviant behaviours, among them sexual harassment.
