Delinquent girls and the challenges they face in reaching justice

At midday today the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, in partnership with Terre des hommes Switzerland (TDH), held a workshop entitled "Delinquent girls and the challenges they face in reaching justice" in the hall of the La Terrazza restaurant, attended by Captain Amal Nofal, director of the women's reform and rehabilitation centre, and Mr. Ismail Tanira, director of the social defence department at the Ministry of Social Affairs. The meeting was opened by lawyer Younis Al-Tahrawi, head of the legal unit at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, who welcomed the guests and those present and reviewed the role the juvenile justice committee has played in achieving results in improving the legal reality for children in conflict with the law.

For her part, Nofal reviewed the situation of delinquent girls and how they are dealt with by the custodial body she represents, explaining that there is a particular way of dealing with such groups. She recommended the need to expedite juvenile cases and not to postpone them without their cases being heard for long periods.

In his address, Tanira pointed to the need to find a place to shelter delinquent girls, though this is prevented by the difficult resources available in the Strip. In closing, those present praised the efforts being made and stressed, through their interventions, the importance of awareness, culture and upbringing, which fall on society as a whole.
