The Centre launches psychological support activities for children within the project for reducing the risk of illiteracy among children
The recreational activities have been launched within the project for reducing the risk of illiteracy among children in the Gaza Strip, which the Centre has been carrying out in all the Strip's governorates since the middle of last February with funding from the European Union. These activities aim at giving children relief through entertainment and play with purposeful activities. It is worth noting that these activities come within the project that aims at raising the level of attainment among pupils who suffer from low academic attainment. For her part, Heba Al-Baz, the project's field coordinator in the Gaza, Middle and North governorates, confirmed that the pupils' results at the associations in the Middle governorate, Gaza and the North demonstrate noticeable progress in the pupils' level, and that many of the parents of the targeted pupils are calling for an increase in the pupils' teaching sessions and for longer time for lessons, since the lessons at the associations are given for two hours for three subjects: Arabic, English and mathematics. Omar Al-Fajm, the project's field coordinator in the Rafah and Khan Younis governorates, stated that, two months after the start of the educational project, a noticeable change has come over the pupils in their academic level, after the results of the March exams were presented and compared with the diagnostic tests the teachers gave the pupils when they joined the project. The teacher Hala Attallah, a mathematics teacher, confirms that the fifth grade pupils at the Najda Social Association in Khan Younis governorate, the camp area, have been able to master the multiplication tables up to the 9 times table, although when the pupils joined they had mastered none of it, and this in itself is an achievement with this low-attaining group. Umm Mohammed, the mother of the pupil Reem, confirms that her daughter now has greater motivation to read and study after joining those lessons.
