Conflict Resolution trains women mukhtars in how to resolve HLP disputes
Gaza, Publication and Information Unit:
It is well known in Palestinian society, and indeed in Arab societies in general, that reconciling disputing parties is the task of the reconciliation figures, the mukhtars, but for a woman to enter this field seems something strange in society.
The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution has resolved to bring women into reconciliation by giving them a series of specialised courses to qualify them to work under the title of women reconciliation figures, "women mukhtars". The latest of these was training them in how to resolve HLP disputes, with 20 women mukhtars taking part in the course, some of them community activists, heads of associations, academics and wives of mukhtars, who liked the idea of reconciling between people and were prompted to work in this field.
For his part, the lawyer of the legal information, counselling and aid project at the Centre, Ahmed Hassouna, said that "training the women mukhtars is an experience worthy of attention for its great return in supporting citizens in their daily and life matters with high competence".
He added that the themes of the training, which ran for four consecutive days, aimed to increase the women mukhtars' familiarity with arbitration procedures, particularly on the subject of women's rights in inheritance, consensual division of property and real estate, mediation in real estate ownership disputes within its legal rules, in addition to arbitration in land cases.
It is worth noting that this course comes within the project for providing legal aid to women in need, funded by the Norwegian Refugee Council
