Conflict Resolution discusses the phenomenon of the premeditated killing of women on Watan TV

As part of launching the campaign against the killing of women, and within the project "Towards a society free of violence against women" funded by Norwegian People's Aid, the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, in cooperation with Watan TV, produced two television programmes on the phenomenon of the killing of women in Palestinian society.
For her part, the legal adviser at the Ministry of Women's Affairs, Wafa Al-Araj, stressed the need to unite efforts to produce a deterrent law to stop the crimes committed daily against women.
The director of the gender unit at the Ministry of Interior, Nihad Wahdan, pointed out that the unit works on following up cases concerning women and that the ministry trains the security services in how to deal with women subjected to violence.

The second programme addressed the phenomenon of killing from a sharia and legal standpoint. The director general of the research centre at the Dar al-Ifta, Mohammed Salah, explained that the penalty of retribution is firmly established in Islamic law and does not change with the times, and that killing has no justification whatever the circumstances, stressing the need for retribution not to be taken without recourse to the judiciary.
The director of the judicial information centre at the Ministry of Justice, Majdi Hardan, said that the appropriate penalty for the crime of killing is one that meets national and social needs, calling for organised joint work between scholars of religion, law and psychology so that the penalty is fitting and deterrent.
At the close of the programmes the participants stressed the rejection of violence against women and that the crime of killing women is premeditated murder that must be punished without giving any justifications to the perpetrator.
