Conflict Resolution recommends activating resolution 1325 supporting women's rights in places of conflict and crisis

The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution recommended expanding awareness and education campaigns for women, particularly in rural areas, and directing the media to activate resolution 1325 issued by the United Nations Security Council, which guarantees that more rights are given to women during periods of war and conflict around the world.
These recommendations came during a round-table dialogue meeting entitled "Resolution 1325 between theory and practice", organised by the Conflict Resolution Center in coordination with the Wifaq Association for the Care of Women and Children in Rafah governorate and held at the association's premises on 8/12/2011, in the presence of members of the Legislative Council and a number of legal, clan and women's figures in Palestinian society.
Juma called for expanding educational campaigns among women about the importance of resolution 1325 and the need to apply it in the country's governorates, and for addressing the stereotyped image of women by including their rights and their social participation in the educational curricula. He noted that what counts is not the issuing of the resolution but putting its provisions into effect, spreading awareness and translating its texts into reality on the ground.
For her part, Buthaina Sobh called for activating the role of human rights centres in the Palestinian territories to monitor the violations and challenges facing women, to submit reports to United Nations bodies and to expose the continuing assaults against women. She said: "Palestinian women must contribute to making national and community reconciliation succeed through their representation in dialogue sessions and within organisations and associations, so as to guarantee that they are given their rights and that they fulfil their duties in society."
Holding this workshop in Rafah governorate comes within the events of the 16 days campaign to combat violence against women in a number of the country's governorates in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with the participation of a number of women's and community organisations, among them the Conflict Resolution Center.
