The role of the Legislative Council in enacting laws to limit the phenomenon of violence against women, by Naima Al-Sheikh Ali, member of the Legislative Council
Description : The United Nations defined "violence against women" in its Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women as "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life". Palestinian women, however, in addition to this definition, suffer the various forms of violence arising from the existence of the occupation and its repressive practices in all their forms, which affect their lives negatively and are added to the forms of social violence women suffer in our society, particularly as our society is considered a patriarchal and domineering one in which worn-out and harmful customs and traditions prevail that look at women with a view of inferiority, heedless of the successes women in our society have achieved that have dazzled everyone in every field, social, educational, economic and in the struggle.
