The project "Towards a society free of violence" begins broadcasting radio programmes in Hebron governorate

The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution has begun broadcasting five radio programmes in Hebron governorate about lobbying and advocacy campaigns within the project "Towards a society free of violence", in coordination with Radio Al-Rabiah on 88.6 FM in Hebron.

On the importance of beginning the radio programmes, the coordinator of the project "Towards a society free of violence" in Hebron, Salwa Al-Hafez, pointed out that reaching the local public through the media increases public awareness on issues of supporting women, in order to reduce the crimes women may be subjected to, such as killing or assault. She added: "We broadcast the first programme to explain and warn about the problems arising from marginalising women's role and treating it as unimportant and secondary by some men or husbands within society."

Al-Hafez pointed out that the programmes will focus on the relationship between law and clan custom in addressing women's problems, the role of the police in protecting women and community awareness, as well as shedding light on the media's contribution to supporting women. She explained that the radio programmes will focus on calling for strict laws to reduce the killing of women, on pursuing perpetrators legally, on reducing clan intervention, and on seeking to unite media and institutional efforts in order to reach a safe and suitable environment for mothers, wives and women within society.

It is noted that the project "Towards a society free of violence" is carried out by the Conflict Resolution Center with funding from the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) programme in the governorates of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, in order to ensure that psychological, social and legal services are provided to marginalised women and to move towards a safe environment free of violence for all women.
