The Palestinian Center holds an educational workshop on "Adolescence"
Adolescence is one of the most critical stages a person passes through among the various phases of life, which are marked by constant renewal. The danger in this stage, which takes a person from childhood to adulthood, lies in the changes in the various aspects of growth (physical, physiological, mental, social, emotional, religious and moral), and in the fact that a person goes through many conflicts in it, internal and external. This is what the educator Ilham Hammad said during an educational workshop held by the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution within the series of activities of the project "Supporting and empowering women victims of violence" at Beit Hanoun school, attended by twenty-five women on Thursday 17/3/2011.
Mrs. Hammad added that there is a difference between adolescence and puberty, since the latter is only one aspect of adolescence and also precedes it in time, being the first sign of the child's entry into the stage of adolescence.
The women also spoke about some of the problems facing their children at this stage, such as excessive irritability, the wish to separate from parents and to obtain freedom and independence, oversleeping, laziness and slackness.
For her part, Mrs. Hammad explained that the adolescent's wish to achieve his own ends without regard for the common good is only a result of the biological, physical and psychological changes that come over him at this stage. Consequently he may scream, swear, steal, kick younger children and fight with older ones, damage property, argue over trivial matters, get into trouble, ignore the need to ask permission, and take no interest in the feelings of others. Mothers and fathers must therefore follow up their children and help them to overcome and get through this stage, for their role is very important since they are the first environment surrounding them.
