Let us raise it together … yes to combating "violence against women"

The project to combat violence against women in the Palestinian areas, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, as it follows closely the growth of the phenomenon of violence against women, whose pace keeps rising despite the many projects and events that have targeted combating violence over the past ten years. The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution has left its clear mark in combating violence against women in the West Bank and the Strip, and has been able to achieve dozens of success stories that stopped the practice of violence against those women.
The project to combat violence against women, carried out by the Palestinian NGO Network and the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, seeks to strengthen the combating of violence against Palestinian women, who suffer violence that increases every moment until it has become a real phenomenon confirmed by a body of research studies, which confirmed that one in every four women in Gaza suffers from the violence practised against her.
The lived facts still confirm, moment after moment, that the cases of violence Palestinian women live through are not confined to one group or class in particular, but are spread throughout all social circles with their various cultural and economic forms. They also take multiple faces and dimensions, built in their deep essence on the pattern of the distribution of social roles between woman and man. Then the man-made laws came to entrench this view and this situation, which has made them, in many cases, stand unable to overcome it, particularly given the political, social and economic situation the Palestinian people live in, formerly and now.
Reading violence against women requires of us a new vision that involves demolishing many structures and building new ones that champion the values of the age and genuinely take into account the particularity of the reality we live in, without overlooking the changes and transformations that have affected the women's cause as a whole in its dialectical entanglement with the national cause and the social dimension.
The project includes a series of multiple events in order to mobilise Palestinian public opinion and press decision-makers to work on protecting women and combating all forms of violence against them, particularly killing on the grounds of honour, by carrying out a national campaign with the participation of academic, religious and legal figures, members of the Legislative Council and representatives of civil organisations in workshops on the issues of violence against women, and offering the recommendations needed to draft the national document on combating violence against women.
The project worked on forming an advisory committee of academic, religious and legal figures and representatives of civil organisations, whose tasks are to supervise the project and the conference and to draft the campaign's final document. A working paper was prepared on violence against women from a legal, social and cultural-religious angle.
Launching a website for the project specialising in the issues of violence against women with a focus on killing on the grounds of family honour. The competent government and civil organisations must provide the website with all the materials available to them on violence against women, particularly as the website will continue even after the end of the project, which will be crowned by the conference on combating violence against women, "killing on the grounds of family honour", in addition to preparing a document that will be the point of reference for the organisations that will work in the field of combating violence against women.
