The Centre holds a workshop entitled "The juveniles department at Nablus police station"

Nablus: the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution today held, in cooperation with the Nablus police (juveniles department), a workshop entitled "The juveniles department at the police station in the city of Nablus", within the project for supporting and empowering women victims of violence funded by Norwegian People's Aid.
This workshop was attended by a number of civil society organisations, the most prominent of them the women's centres and charitable associations from within the city and from a group of surrounding villages.
At the start, the project coordinator, Nisreen Zalmout, welcomed the participants and thanked them for accepting the invitation and taking part. The Centre's director, Mr. Ahmed Abu Ayyash, also welcomed the participants and explained the main services and activities the Centre carries out.
For her part, Major Ghada Dweikat, head of the juveniles department at the police station, gave a detailed explanation of the juveniles department and the cases referred to them and of the mechanisms for dealing with those cases.
Through this workshop a number of important issues were also raised, the most important of them the question of child custody, where Mrs. Sulaf Sawalha, director of reconciliation at the courts, noted that there is no law compelling parents to take custody of children even if they are unfit.
Mrs. Falak Al-Khayyat, director of the Family Defence Association, also spoke about some of the cases she had handled inside the association and how she dealt with them.
At the end of the workshop there were a number of questions and queries the participants put to Major Ghada, and the main recommendations, where a set of workshops will be held in a number of villages in coordination with local community organisations.
